Hearing Resource Teacher

Who Receives Support?

Services are provided to students who have a medically diagnosed and documented hearing loss or a history of middle ear problems, which impacts their educational achievement and they require regular, frequent, and on-going direct and/or consultative services from a qualified Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

Criteria for DHH Categorization:

To be eligible for Ministry supplemental funding as a Deaf or Head of Hearing student, the following criteria must be met:

  • A medical diagnosis of hearing loss has been made,
  • a current Individual Education Plan (IEP) must be in place, and
  • the student must be receiving special education services that are directly related to the student’s hearing loss on a regular, frequent, and on-going basis from a qualified Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

Support:

The Itinerant Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing provides support and this can include:

  • language stimulation and remediation
  • reading development and remediation
  • speech and auditory training
  • audiometric testing completed as needed
  • amplification equipment and trouble-shooting (ie. Hearing aids, FM Systems, etc.)
  • study habits and organizational skills
  • thinking skills (ie. Critical, creative logic, reasoning skills)
  • personal and social development (self esteem, confidence, self advocacy)
  • pre- and post-lessons on classroom topics
  • appropriate adaptations and modifications of curriculum and program
  • educational assessments of students’ abilities and progress
  • academic tutoring
  • sign language
  • Deaf Culture information
  • staff and/or classroom in-services or workshops
  • teacher, parent and CEA support
  • collaboration with LRT to co-ordinate and involve all team members (students, parents and staff) in establishing the student’s IEP

An Itinerant Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing provides support to the student, parents, classroom teacher, and other school staff to ensure inclusion is a successful and positive experience for all.
